We built a boat, my sweetheart and I,
And set off into the deep, blue sea.
It won't be easy, my mother cried,
And nor did we expect it to be.
We rode the waves, and surfed the swell,
Flying high and diving low,
We were hand in hand, my sweetheart and I,
Through soft sail and backbreaking row.
But that boat we built, one day seemed small,
Hemmed in by the ocean wide.
My sweetheart spent more time in the bow,
Looking for something new on the tide.
And then one day, along came a shiny yacht
Or so it seemed from far away,
And my sweetheart jumped ship with barely a thought,
For the next minute or hour or day.
I wondered if I could navigate alone
Because my boat seemed bigger than before,
Perhaps I should drift, see how it ends.
Lost in the sea or run aground on the shore.
But no, said I, as I looked at the sea,
There might be new worlds for me to know.
With my hand to the tiller I hoped for the best.
And through my tears and sweat I saw "Land ho!"
